As a designer, working with kbCRATE, for the last several years, I’ve had the opportunity to design hundreds of kitchen and bathrooms. Every type of style imaginable has been incorporated into these spaces, as each client has their different tastes and desires, ranging from Traditional, Industrial, Spanish, Modern and every type of Farmhouse (Thank you Chip and Joanna Gaines). I love making the vision come together, watching clients get excited about the finishes we’ve selected and leaving with the confidence to move forward.

The past couple of months I’ve had more than one friend ask for vision and/or advice on a home project. After asking, they both said similar things to me, “I want your help, but I don’t like things as modern as you.” This was their nice way of saying, “I want your help, but I don’t want it to look like your house.” This doesn’t offend me at all as I want a specific style reflected in my own home, and it’s my job to reflect each client’s tastes in their home, applying design principles and above all else: function. I have a passion for clean lines and high contrast; all of which reflect a modern style using finishes such as glass, leather, and metal. Not all my clients have the same taste as me, but I also have a passion for good design. Most of the time we are updating existing spaces and we need to keep in mind the style of the rest of the home so that nothing we do looks out of place.

I’m currently working with a client who has a Spanish style home (kC & bC Wedgewood Court) and I’ve loved the challenge of looking for finishes that reflect this style in her kitchen, bathrooms and living room.  The tiles are more rustic and the colors are all earth-toned with rich wood floors. Even though this style is different than what I’m used to working with, it forces me out of my comfort zone and ultimately helps me become a better designer. I do appreciate many styles and a professional designer can work with all of them.

A good designer designs for you, not the other way around. You hire a designer because they are experts in their field, knowing what finishes are right for a space, what colors will complement and the space requirements to make a room functional. I think it’s important to find a designer that understands your vision, has a passion for what they do and gives you confidence that your interests are a priority.
