Kitchen renovation in Brentwood.

Take a look at our recent kitchenCRATE project at Avocado Place. In just twelve days, this rundown 80s kitchen did a complete 180 degrees! We don’t want to spoil the project too much (as we will get to details later), but we love the two different countertops and the newly installed range hood that helps visually make this kitchen look larger. Plus, no more nights cooking kitchen in the dark! With the new overhead lighting, this room has got to be one of the best lit in the house.

But don’t just take our word on how well this remodeling job in Brentwood turned out. Look below for the customer testimonial, project specifications and extensive before and after pictures!

The Homeowner’s KitchenCRATE Experience

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

Our favorite part of the CRATE process is everything is organized from the time of the phone consultation, the on-site consultation with Willy Stevens, down to the trip to the tile company in Arizona tile in Livermore with Willy and Casey ( so happy with the countertop and tile choices!), the walkthrough with Aaron and Jake, and of course, the actual remodeling itself.

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

Our favorite part of the CRATE staff is that not only is everyone very courteous and professional, they also feel like they’re family. They’re punctual, they start on time and leave on time. They also clean up after they’re done. Aaron is so accessible and would answer all my questions in a timely manner. They want to make sure that we are satisfied with their work and that they address any concern that we have.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

I’m surprised that they did stick to the schedule and that they were indeed done with both the kitchen and master bathroom remodeling in just 3 weeks just like they said.

Day by Day Progress Breakdown

(Note: We added a few extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons.)

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors and drawers, and outdated light fixture. We also reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz counters. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new quartz countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.

Days 2 & 3 – The electrical team began the wiring for the new can lighting. Eight 6-inch LED recessed light fixtures were placed strategically around the kitchen to optimize the lighting over work spaces. Next, we used metal-stud framing to sheetrock the old light box and then hung and taped the sheetrock. On this day, our team also made cabinet modifications by removing the double cabinet above the stove top to make room for an eye-catching hood vent.

Days 4 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets in the kitchen.  Using a high-grade, oil-based primer every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish. The sheetrock at the countertop was repaired and made ready for the new tile backsplash.

Days 5 & 6 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Brentwood home. Two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy semi-glass paint in Hush Gray were applied to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets and a complimenting Kelly-Moore City Tower was applied to the island cabinets. This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.

Day 7 & 8 – The walls and ceiling in the kitchen also received a fresh coat of paint. Kelly-Moore Campfire Smoke paint with a Satin finish was applied to the walls and the ceiling was painted to match the existing paint.

Days 9 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful Blanco Diamond super single bowl in Truffle. Arizona Tile Lagos natural stone quartz countertops were installed as the primary countertops and Arizona Tile Linen quartz was installed on the island, both with a small radius edge detail.

Day 10 –  The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Arizona Tile Core Grey 3″ x 6″ ceramic tiles on the backsplash. The backsplash was grouted using Laticrete Light Pewter grout.

Days 11 & 12 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Simplice faucet and Transitional Design soap dispenser, each with a vibrant stainless finish, were installed and the entire project was cleaned of all construction debris.
