After kC Walnut Woods 02

At first glance and from a distance this kitchenCRATE doesn’t appear to be a huge transformation.  The flooring remained and the new cabinet color, countertops, and backsplash maintained their original bright, white appearance.

But if you scroll down to the extensive before & after pictures below you’ll see up-close-and-personal not only fresh new finishes but the conversion of the old, rarely-used desk and shelving into a larger countertop and additional cabinets.  And don’t miss the color-changing LED cabinet lighting, custom blue range hood and other clever details on this retro kitchen.

But don’t just take our word on how well this job turned out. Look below for the customer testimonial, project specifications and impressive before and after pictures featuring custom cabinets and countertops!

The Homeowner’s KitchenCRATE Experience

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

The kitchenCRATE model is the renovation template for the 21st century. This is how a kitchen remodel should go down. The process was organized and efficient. We received email updates and detailed information every step of the way. The selection of counter material, cabinet hardware, and paint couldn’t have been easier as samples of everything were presented right at our kitchen table.

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

Forget about shady contractors who tack on never-ending costs throughout the process or add days or weeks to your project. The team at kitchenCRATE was knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and efficient. They set a schedule and met or exceeded it each day.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

We were happily surprised that they embraced our vision of creating a cool mid-century atomic kitchen. They built a custom blue vent cover and installed a custom dishwasher panel for us. They added new electrical fittings for an awesome retro pendant light. We were also thrilled that they were able to perform so many customizations for us. They matched and added a whole new set of cabinets and even added outlets for LED color changing cabinet lighting.

Day by Day Remodeling Progress

(Note: We added an extra day to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons)

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors and drawers, and the built-in desk. We reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz countertops. Toward the end of the day, we created the template for the new countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.

Day 2 – The custom made cabinets were installed in place of the built-in desk while the electrical team began the wiring for the new LED undercabinet lighting.

Day 3 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets in the kitchen.  Using a high-grade, oil-based primer, every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.

Day 4 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Modesto home. Two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy paint in Whitest White were applied to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets in the kitchen.  This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality. Kelly-Moore Silver Strand Beach with an eggshell finish was applied to the kitchen walls.

Day 5 – The kitchenCRATE team was on site again to install the beautiful Blanco Performa Silgranit double bowl sink in Metallic Gray. Once the sink was installed, the countertop installation team arrived to install the MSI Sparkling White quartz countertops with a mitered edge.

Day 6 – The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Daltile Arctic White 3″ x 6″  tiles on the backsplash. This was grouted using Custom Bright White grout.

Day 7 & 8 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the new pendant light was installed, the Kohler Simplice faucet and Kohler Contemporary soap dispensers, each with a polished chrome finish, were installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
