How does a bad remodel relate to a bad movie? Think about it. Ever walk out of a movie theater feeling disappointed, upset and, frankly, ripped off? “Well, there’s 10 bucks I’ll never get back,” we say to ourselves.

Luckily, that poor movie-going experience will slip by from recent memory and those 10 bucks probably won’t break the bank account.

But imagine having to see that horrendous movie every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to bed. Think about it waiting for you at home while you’re at work and how you were so excited to see it, only to be utterly and completely disappointed in the end. And finally, the picture still has to pay for it again and again over at least the next few months.

The analogy may be extreme and of course, they are on different scales, but there are several parallels between a bad remodel and a bad movie, much of it tied to the emotional roller coaster you experience through the entire ordeal.

Let’s examine just exactly how these two processes play out and how to avoid the pitfalls and overcome the challenges, at least when it comes to that home project.

Trailer

We all know the feeling, the excitement: when the images appear and the sound effects kick in, eagerly awaiting the cast and title of the upcoming blockbuster. The trailer of a film is akin to the vision homeowners have for the final product of their next home remodel.

But like a movie trailer, oftentimes this vision is not yet clear and developing a complete picture requires some assistance and guidance. Instead, we’re more so emotionally in tune to the final result and begin attaching expectations for it. However, the planning and steps and processes for how to get to the finish line aren’t quite all there.

Cast and Crew

Sometimes, just having that A-List celeb can save a movie. But that’s all relative because going from bad to mediocre still implies things fell short of expectations. Hey, Leonardo DiCaprio can only do so much!

During that home remodel, this is key when selecting the right contractor for the job. With performers, we judge them on their past track record, awards and accolades, and reputation and credibility within the industry. The same should be said for the folks you put in charge of your home project.

Having the right people and pieces in place can make all the difference during your remodel experience, from the quality of work and price point to customer service and comfortability. You will rest a lot easier knowing you have people you trust working on and in your home.

Plot

This is where the rubber meets the road. By this point, we’ve gone through our share of thrills, disappointments and comedic moments, and we begin framing how we feel about the whole experience. We see the peaks and valleys and the arc of the overall process.

With the home remodel, as things play out we start to think back at the beginning and our initial vision. How much of it is aligning to our expectations? What compromises and/or changes have we made? Are there any decisions or things that could have been done differently?

No matter what, at this point of the remodel or movie process homeowners and movie-goers alike should feel a sense of satisfaction and begin eyeing final completion if all is going well.

Ending

Even with the similarities, a bad remodel and a bad movie have starkly different consequences in the end. Most folks will easily move along from a disappointing movie, but a remodel gone wrong? That will take a while longer and won’t come cheaply to fix.

The silver lining of it all is chalking it up to a learning experience and doing things differently next time. When it comes to your home, though, why take that risk or go through it in the first place? Something that valuable and important should be handled with proper care and planning right from the get-go.
