Every neighborhood has one: the home where everyone likes to hang out and enjoy good company and a nice glass of wine. Our latest kitchenCRATE remodeling project was in just this type of home in Turlock, CA.
In 8 days (the 8th day included complete painting of three additional rooms) the kitchenCRATE team turned this standard, tract-home kitchen into an even more lively place to eat, drink and be merry.
But don’t just take our word for it: Read on to hear verbatim what this homeowner experienced, and then scroll down to see before-and-after pictures along with a two-minute time-lapse video of the entire project!
The Homeowner’s Experience
The kitchenCRATE team asked Mr. & Mrs. Kruthoff (the homeowners) a few questions regarding their experience. Here’s what they said:
What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?
Our favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process was the confidence that we had to leave our house in their hands while we went out of town for the remodel. From our initial meeting with Scott, everything went so smooth that we had no problems handing over our house key to them so they could come and go as they needed; while we enjoyed a mini-vacation out of town. We were able to come home to a beautiful new kitchen without having to live through the process.
What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?
The kitchenCRATE team was great. They were all very friendly and accessible. We were not around for much of the remodel, but the few times we were, they were always very conscientious. I have no doubts that if we had chose to stay home during the remodel, that they would have gone out of their way to make it as comfortable for us as possible.
Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?
I don’t know if there is a remodel project that exists that doesn’t present a surprise or two along the way. However, the kitchenCRATE teams customer service level was excellent. We were able to work through the surprises with them to find solutions that worked great. We were very impressed with their level of customer service, especially Scott and Jared. We would not hesitate to work with them on future projects because of it and the excellent work they did. We are so happy with all of the design elements that we chose for our new kitchen and the kitchenCRATE team brought it all together for us. It looks like a showroom kitchen now and we love it!
Day by Day Progress
Here’s how we did it:
Day 1 – Demo Day! On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the entire floor with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, cabinet doors and drawers. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new granite countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site. Lastly, our expert carpenters placed a plywood sub-top and installed steel supports to eliminate the need for corbels at the peninsula.
Day 2 – After protecting the walls and the ceilings, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets. Using a high-grade oil-based primer, every inch of the cabinet exteriors (no need to paint the melamine interiors), was caulked, sanded and primed. This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.
Day 3 – After thoroughly sanding the primed cabinets, the painters applied two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-Poxy paint in Brittany Beige. This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.
Day 4 – The capable team at AAI Granite & Tile in Salida arrived to install the beautiful Moen Neva stainless steel sink and the MSI New Venetian Gold granite countertops with a 1.5 inch mitered edge. This polished granite with creamy undertones and dark flecks match perfectly with Brittany Beige cabinet color.
Day 5 – Once again, AAI Granite & Tile was back on-site, this time to install the 3×6 Travertine tile with cream-tones and accented with a 3″ strip of 1×1 Mosaic tile. The harmony between the natural stone cream tile and the glossy glass accent strip is amazing!
Day 6 – AAI Granite & Tile returned one last time to add Laticrete Butter Cream grout to the backsplash. The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. Lastly, the kitchenBOX team installed the homeowner’s new stainless steel Frigidaire appliances.
Day 7 – The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced in almond color, the Moen faucet was installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
Day 8 – We added an extra day to the standard 7-day process to add a special touch to this home. At the homeowner’s request, we painted the entire kitchen, dinette area, living room, and the adjacent hall. Glidden’s Tawny Birch added just the right touch to this already beautiful living space!
