Apron Front Sinks Are Both Stylish and Roomy

One of the first things that any inspiring home chef will notice when they walk into a kitchen is the sink. One trend that has taken hold is the apron front sink, also known as a farmhouse sink or simply an apron sink. Apron front sinks have an iconic look with their exposed front, as compared to being set into the cabinetry, and they instantly add vintage charm. They are characteristically both wide and deep.

Your options include cast iron, fireclay, stainless steel, copper and marble. Beyond materials, there is a wide variety of styles. The front is either smooth for a modern look, or if you want to make a bolder visual statement, there are ones that have a decorated or patterned front. The sink is either open or divided into two compartments, either equally divided or offset, most often in a 60/40 split.

The history of the apron front sink dates all the way back to 1897 when they were introduced by Shaws of Darwen in Lancashire, England. Shaws still manufactures the highly durable fireclay sinks that are hand poured, shaped, and then stamped with artisan’s name. Another material that can handle the rigors of daily use is enamel covered cast iron. Of course, with every pro there is a con, and these harder materials can take a toll on your delicate dishes.

One reason for their popularity is they are nice and roomy. Their relatively large size can pose a problem if working within the constraints of existing cabinetry and countertops. Also, with size comes to weight, which must be supported from below. Unlike other styles of sinks, with an apron front sink, the faucet is typically separate and mounted behind the sink on the counter. All of these factors must be taken into consideration, which can increase the overall cost of getting your new sink up and running. Not to worry, the experts at kitchenCRATE can give you an assessment of what would be involved in switching over to this style of the sink before you make the investment.

Everyone from Ikea to Kohler has gotten in on this trend, which means there is a range in both look and price. With the wide variety of materials and colors, you are sure to find one that matches the style of your dream kitchen.
