Although it’s the predominant contemporary cabinet finish, not everyone is in love with painted cabinets. As an alternative to painting cabinets, kitchenCRATE offers cabinet re-staining. Modesto customers, and those in the other areas kitchenCRATE serves, have experimented with an array of cabinet stain colors. And our most recently completed kitchenCRATE is no different!
These 1988 kitchen cabinets look new once again, and when combined with the rich granite tops, tile backsplash and new cabinet hardware, we think you’ll agree this kitchen is ready for the holidays!

Day by Day Progress
(Note: We added several extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons, like these…)
Here’s how we did it:
Day 1 – Demo Day! On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors, and drawers. We reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new granite countertops. Toward the end of the day, we created the template for the new granite countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.
Days 2 – 5 – The painters began the process of striping the cabinet boxes to prepare them for the new Red Mahogany stain. Once the cabinets boxes were stripped of their original finish, the cabinet boxes were stained with a beautiful red mahogany stain. This process entails a spray application of the stain, followed by a clear coating for the utmost durability. This same process was used on the doors and drawers, which are stained off-site in a climate-controlled booth for the highest possible quality.
Day 6 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful single bowl Kohler Vault stainless steel sink and the Arizona Tile Giallo Fiorito granite countertops with a mitered edge.
Day 7 – The tile backsplash artisans began installing the Bedrosians Torreon 3″ x 6″ tumbled and brushed travertine tiles on the backsplash. This was grouted with Laticrete Butter Cream grout.
Day 8 – The kitchenCRATE team applied Kelly-Moore Navajo White paint with an eggshell finish to the walls and touched up the ceiling paint.
Day 9 – Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s new appliances. The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-stained cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Simplice faucet with a Vibrant Stainless finish was installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
