The Homeowner’s Kitchen Remodel Experience
What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?
Working with the interior decorator, the kitchen organization, the organization of the entire project. I love how I was walked through the entire process. Willy guided me through the process and helped keep the project moving. Jared met with me, explained the construction process, was available for questions and kept the timeline he gave me originally.
What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?
The team helped me through the entire process. They were easily accessed and answered all my questions.
Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?
Yes, I was surprised that the project was completed when I was told it would be completed. I was amazed at the cleanliness of the site. Every person I came in contact with was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and was the best at what they do. There were no corners cut – my backsplash was installed diagonally and many times contractors use grout instead of cutting that tiny chip to fill in… that did not happen here. Everything installed was installed very professionally.

Day by Day Progress
(Note: We added a few extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons, like these.)
Here’s how we did it:
Day 1 – Demo Day! On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, out-dated lightbox, cabinet doors, and drawers. We reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz countertops. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.
Day 2 – The electrical team began the wiring for the new LED recessed lighting. Six six-inch LED can lights were placed strategically around the kitchen to optimize the lighting over workspaces. These lights are installed to maximize light levels for the most common countertop uses. Next, we used metal-stud framing to sheetrock the old light box and then hung and taped the sheetrock. The cabinets under the cooktop were modified to accept the new pull out drawers.
Day 3 – The sheetrock was repaired and prepped for the new tile backsplash.
Days 4 & 5 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, the painters began the process of striping the cabinet boxes to prepare them for the new stain. Once the cabinets boxes were stripped of their original finish, the cabinet boxes were stained with a beautiful Old Masters Deep Red Rich Mahogany stain. This process entails a spray application of the stain, followed by a clear coating for the utmost durability. This same process was used on the doors and drawers, which are stained off-site in a climate-controlled booth for the highest possible quality.
Day 6 – The painting team was on site to complete the refinishing process on the cabinet boxes and to apply Kelly-Moore Wise Owl paint to the kitchen walls and Swiss Coffee to the ceiling.
Day 7 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful Blanco Valea sink in Biscotti and the MSI Coronado quartz countertops with a beveled edge.
Day 8 – The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Bedrosians Crema Viejo 4″ x 4″ tumbled travertine tiles, set in a diagonal pattern, with accent pieces of Emser Renaissance Capri Antique Bronze dot tiles on the backsplash. This was grouted using Laticrete Mushroom grout.
Days 9 & 10 – Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s new stainless steel appliances. The transformation hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-stained cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Simplice faucet and Transitional soap dispenser, each with a vibrant stainless finish, were installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
