The kitchenCRATE team is excited to share yet another contemporary kitchenCRATE kitchen remodel. Livermore, CA is home to this 1988 renovation, and it’s a perfect example of using contemporary, cool colors to revitalize an open floor plan.
This amazing combination of Samsung quartz tops, Daltile backsplash tile, and Kelly-Moore ‘Pebble Beach’ cabinet paint shine beneath the new LED can lighting and compliment the Emser Alpine Foam tile floor perfectly.

The Homeowner’s Kitchen Remodel Livermore Experience
What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?
My favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process was knowing when everything would be done. KitchenCRATE has a very impressive business model. Every detail of the project was discussed and planned in advance, so there were very few decisions that needed to be made once construction began. Scott, Jared, and the rest of the team are extremely detail-oriented and organized. I had a schedule of what would happen each day once construction began and there was minimal deviation.
What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?
KitchenCRATE has an amazing team from the top down. Every aspect of the job—from the initial introductory meeting to the completion of the punch list—was handled with exceptional detail and professionalism. During the planning phase, I was extremely impressed with the timeliness of communication. When I had questions, Scott always responded promptly with detailed answers, so I felt confident that if issues arose during the job, they would be dealt with quickly. The guys who worked on my job were incredibly productive. I was amazed at how much they accomplished each day. They were extremely respectful of me and my home, they were extraordinarily quality-conscious, and they were really nice guys. When I had questions, they patiently answered them, and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction.
Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?
The construction portion of kitchenCRATE process was so much less disruptive and stressful than I imagined it would be. It actually shocked me! Most of the credit goes to the guys who worked on the job. I felt totally comfortable having them in my home. I also loved the floor to ceiling plastic enclosure that they placed around my kitchen. I was worried that my furniture and carpeting would get dirty or damaged during the job, but all of the mess stayed in the kitchen. The crew also cleaned up at the end of each day so we weren’t left with a big mess overnight.

Day by Day Progress
(Note: We added a few extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons, like these…)
Here’s how we did it:
Day 1 – Demo Day! On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors, and drawers. We reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz countertops. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new quartz countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.
Day 2 –The electrical team began the wiring for the new can lighting. Six inch can lights were placed strategically around the kitchen to optimize the lighting over workspaces.
Day 3 – Next, we used metal-stud framing to sheetrock the old lightbox and then hung and taped the sheetrock.
Day 4 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets. Using a high-grade, oil-based primer, every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed. This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.
Day 5 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Modesto home and applied two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy paint in Pebble Beach to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets. This same priming and painting process was used on the new doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.
Day 6 – The countertop installation team arrived to install the beautiful Kohler Hawthorn apron front sink in White and the Sumsung Gentle Gray quartz countertops with a bullnose edge.
Day 7 – The tile backsplash artisans installed the Daltile Arctic White 3″ x 6″ matte tiles. The tile backsplash was grouted with Customs Pewter grout.
Days 8 – 10 – The flooring tile artisans began installing the Emser Alpine Foam 6″ x 36″ floor tiles. Bostick Misty Grey grout was applied to the floor tiles.
Day 11 – Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s new appliances. The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Vinnata faucet and Kohler Transitional soap dispenser each with a vibrant stainless finish were installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
