The Homeowner’s Kitchen Renovation Experience

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

I enjoyed the entire process, from the initial phone call to my first in-person meeting with both Willy and Jared. What initially caught my attention was the timeline, I didn’t want to be months without a kitchen and have had previous experiences where when it comes to home improvements, it always takes much longer than promised. My project was completed 1 day early and nothing was rushed.

What was your favorite part about the kitchenCRATE team?

I felt that the entire team was respectful about being in my home. Everyone was professional, personable, focused and always welcomed my questions. They were always on time, loved it! I work from home and was in my office while most of the work was being done. The team was always thoughtful enough to let me know if there was going to be loud noises, power issues or smells that would affect me.

Was there anything about the process or project that surprised you? If so, what was it?

Everything was very organized and followed the plan from the get-go. I had been prepared for delays and there were none. Overall, a very great experience, can’t wait to do my bathrooms next year. Loved the nice gift of the kitchenCRATE cutting board.

Day by Day Progress

(Note: We added a few extra days to our normal 7-day process to accommodate the owner-request add-ons)

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1 – Demo Day!  On this first day, we set up plastic walls to protect the home from dust, protected the path from the entry door to the kitchen with building paper, and then went to town removing the appliances, countertop, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors and drawers. We also reinforced the plywood sub-tops with steel straps to support the new quartz counters. Toward the end of the day we created the template for the new countertops, which take a few days to fabricate off-site.

Day 2 – The electrical team began replacing the original can lights with LED recessed lighting.  These lights are installed to maximize light levels for the most common countertop uses.  The cabinets were also modified to accept the new wine refrigerator.

Day 3 – The sheetrock was repaired and made ready for the new tile backsplash.

Day 4 – Since all the walls and the ceilings had been protected, our painters began preparing and priming the cabinets in the kitchen.  Using a high-grade, oil-based primer, every inch of the kitchen cabinets were caulked, sanded and primed.  This is the first (and perhaps most critical) step of creating a durable paint finish.

Day 5 – The painters then began refinishing the kitchen cabinets in this Livermore home. Two coats of Kelly-Moore Dura-poxy paint in Hush Gray were applied to the thoroughly sanded and primed cabinets.  This same priming and painting process was used on the doors and drawers, which are painted off-site in a climate-controlled paint booth for the highest possible quality.

Day 6  – The painters were back on site to paint the walls in the kitchen. Kelly-Moore Malibu Beige in a Satin finish was applied to the kitchen walls.

Day 7 – The countertop installation team arrived on site to install the beautiful Blanco Precis single bowl sink in Metallic Gray along with the TCE quartz countertops with a beveled edge.

Day 8 – The tile backsplash artisans were on site to install the Daltile Arctic White 6″ x 6″ matte tiles with an accent strip of  Emser Lucente Certosa stone blend tiles on the backsplash. This was grouted using Laticrete Sterling Silver grout.

Day 8 –  Lastly, the kitchenCRATE team installed the homeowner’s new stainless steel appliances.  The transformation then hit the home stretch with the installation of the freshly-painted cabinet doors and drawers. The final day of the project included an array of “touch-up” items: all outlets and switches were replaced, the Kohler Bellera faucet and Transitional soap dispenser, each with a vibrant stainless finish, were installed and the entire project was cleaned, top-to-bottom.
